Does Playstation Store charge tax?

So I’m planning to get MGS Peace Walker from the Playstation Store, and it costs 39.99. I got 40 bucks worth of PSN cards in my wallet. Will I only be charged 39.99 for the game, or will PLaystation store also charge tax?

  1. It depends on where you are located. I live in Houston, Texas, and I am charged sales tax. The amount of sales tax is based on a state by state basis.

Most online retailers don’t charge sales tax because they are not responsible for the local sales tax, however, Sony has companies in every major state, so when it comes to buying content from the PSN store, they calculate your tax based on your state.

If your state doesn’t charge tax, or exempts online tax, then you won’t be charged. If your state collects taxes, whether online or not, then you will be charged tax.

You can find out if you are charged tax by putting the content in your cart. Before you confirm the purchase, it will tell you exactly how much it will cost, which includes whether there is tax or not. If there is tax, the cost will be more than $19.99. If there is no tax, the cost will be $19.99.

Without knowing where you are, you will have to find out on your own whether you are charged tax or not.

  2. No, the PSN store doesn’t charge tax. I don’t believe there is a tax that exists for downloadable software. (yet?)

When you bought the PSN cards, you were probably charged tax right? So why would you have to pay tax on it again? I always use my credit card, and it never charges me tax. In fact, when I bought the new MW2 maps last night, I only had to deposite $14.99 to my wallet.

  3. Sumina Beech, it depends on the region, for example in the province of Ontario in Canada, if you purchase a PSN card you aren’t charged tax when you buy the card, so a $20 card really only costs you $20 but you are then charged the applicable taxes on any purchases you then make with the $20 once it’s loaded to your account, so with a $20 card, you can’t buy a $19.99 game as it’s over $20 with the taxes included at checkout on the PlayStation Store.

Unless you provide where you live, country and state/province, no accurate answer can be provided as the rules differ by region.

  4. That’s an interesting question. YES. The only 2 places I know about that don’t charge tax is a yard sale and a lemon aid stand (unless them are some gready chindren)

  6. Just fyi, if you live i California, you won’t get charged a tax for downloads. I don’t even think i paid tax for the PSN card when i got it at Target (wasn’t the only thing i bought at the time, so i didn’t pay attention).
