My PlayStation won’t let me go to 1080p. Why is that?

I recently got a used ps3 on Craigslist and I was having trouble with it. I hooked it up and the screen was stretched out and the TV would have red dots and the screen would flicker. I tried to put it to 1080p to fix this problem and it would say not supportive. Then, when a blue moon was overhead on Friday the 13th, I tried it again and it worked. It stayed on 1080p and worked great. The screen wasn’t stretched out and the screen didn’t flicker. It worked like that for about a week. The other day I pulled out the ps3 and the HDMI cord came out. When I put it back in, nothing happened. I put it into safe mode and restored the file data. When the screen came back on it worked good, except that the screen was stretched out and the TV would flicker with red dots again. This time when I try to put it to 1080p it just says not supported. Does anyone know why it is doing this and how I can fix it?

  1. Because it was used, it sounds like the HDMI port may be bad. You can try resetting it in the display settings, but there’s no guarantee that would work.

Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings > HDMI

Choose Automatic or Custom to set your resolution.

  2. If you have another HDMI cable, test it with that cable. That would tell you if the cable is defective.

You can also test the HDMI cable you are using with the PS3 on another device.

Also, are you watching a movie? Or playing a game? Blu Ray movies will display 1080P, while most games do not. Check the game case to see the resolution of the game.
