  1. As another guy said – it depends on the distance. If it’s only 3 feet – even 32″ is a bit large. Here is the simple trick – the size of TV is the distance between you and TV divided by 3.

As for the brand – Sony TVs are overpriced because of the shiny brand. Samsung and Sony produce their screens on the very same factory S-LCD. Go for the Samsung – cheaper and it’s the same (if not better) quality.

  2. The size of your TV is determined more by the size of your room. You can get a TV too big for a room, but you can also get one too small.

The optimal viewing distance for a 32″ 1080p TV is about 4-7 feet.

The optimal viewing distance for a 40″ 1080p TV is about 5-8 feet.

Since both TVs are fairly close in viewing range, you will need to figure out where you normally sit in the room and measure that distance to the TV. If it is closer to 7 or 8 feet, get the bigger TV, if it is closer to 3-4 feet, get the smaller TV. Sitting close to a big TV will cause pixelation (you can see the pixels on the screen instead of a smooth screen). It is always better to go a bit smaller than a bit bigger.

I have a 61″ Sony TV, and I have to sit a minimum of 5 feet away or I see pixelation. I actually sit about 12-13 feet away from my TV with my best viewing range being 7-13 feet.

While bigger always seems better, that is not always the case. Take your room size into account and you will get the most out of the TV.
