I’ve seen a PS3 fat and slim in use but they seem kind of loud, but the thing is my cousin owned them and he doesn’t take care of his items. So my question is were his just defective? How loud are PS3 slims, and his slim makes a ringing sound, is that normal?

  1. Yes, the systems can be loud. The PS3 wasn’t effectively designed to remove heat. Because the system heats up too quickly, the fan is forced to spin at higher speeds to keep it cool. What you are hearing is the fan noise. Some people say it sounds like a jet engine, and others say they barely hear it. If it is too loud it could be a sign that the system is overheating. Keeping the system in an open environment where it is well-ventilated, is key. You also want to make sure the system is kept as clean as possible. Vacuuming the vents at least once a week is a good idea. Other problems could exist that cause noise, like the disk reader not being balanced. Unfortunately the systems tend to be noisy, but if you are concerned that the system has problems don’t hesitate to get it checked out by a professional. They can replace the thermal paste in the system which can keep the system cooler and may reduce the noise. If the system starts to freeze up or shut off, get it looked at promptly.
