How can the PS3 do so much with so little RAM? (and VRAM)?

I know consoles don’t run operating systems so intensive as those of PC’s, but how can the PS3 do games so well with only 256MB RAM and as much in VRAM?

Theoretically, shouldn’t any low-end/medium-end PC with a fair GPU/CPU and like 4 gigs of RAM outperform the PS3? Or does the cell processor have something we can today not match in regular four cores?

  1. PC’s contain far more programs than the PS3. The ps3 cant run windows 7. Ram does’t really matter that much, its the graphics card and processor that counts.
